Montreal to Calgary: across half the country
Calgary is about 3,740 km from Montreal by road — roughly 37 hours of driving before stops. The usual route leaves on Highway 417 toward Ottawa, follows Highway 17 across Northern Ontario along the top of Lake Superior, then crosses the Prairies on the Trans-Canada through Winnipeg and Regina. With a dedicated truck, that is five to seven days from loading in Montreal to delivery in Calgary.
A move this long is quoted the same way as any other long-distance move — one fixed price in writing, from your inventory, before we load — but it is planned differently. Distance amplifies everything: the cost of every extra cubic metre, the effect of a badly packed box, the importance of a delivery date you can live with.
Ship it or replace it?
Across 3,700 km, the question for every large item is whether it is worth the trip. As a rule:
- Ship good furniture, pieces that are hard to replace, art, books, tools, sports equipment and anything with personal value.
- Think twice about particleboard furniture, old mattresses, large and cheap appliances, and anything that will not fit your new home.
- Carry with you documents, jewellery, medication and the electronics you need in the first week.
The video survey measures what is left, and that volume sets the price.
Packing for five days on the highway
A truck crossing the Canadian Shield and the Prairies spends days in motion. Boxes should be full and firm, with heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones; dishes and glass in double-wall cartons with paper between every piece; nothing loose. We wrap furniture in blankets and stretch wrap, disassemble what needs it, and load in tight tiers so nothing shifts. If you would rather not pack yourself, our packing service is billed by the hour.
Dedicated truck or shared trailer
A dedicated truck delivers in five to seven days on a date you plan. A shared trailer travels with other westbound shipments, costs roughly 30% less and delivers within about three to four weeks. On this route, the choice is mostly about how long you can live without your furniture in Calgary.
Calgary weather
Calgary’s winters are cold and dry, broken by Chinook winds that can raise the temperature by twenty degrees in hours. Wood furniture, instruments and electronics do not love sudden changes: let them sit a few hours at room temperature before you unwrap and plug them in. Summer is the busiest season for westbound moves; fall and spring are easier to book, and winter moves are possible with extra time in the delivery window.
Arriving in the Calgary area
Most deliveries are to houses with driveways — in the city’s newer communities, in Airdrie, Cochrane or Okotoks — with larger volumes and easier truck access than a Montreal plex. Downtown and Beltline condos have elevator bookings and building rules; we send the certificate of insurance the building asks for.
Settling in Alberta
Register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, switch your driver’s licence and plates at a registry agent, and update your address with the CRA. Alberta has no provincial sales tax — only the GST — which is worth knowing before you replace the furniture you left behind.
