Moving in Laval
Laval is Quebec’s third-largest city and, for a moving company, one of the most varied. It was created in 1965 from the fourteen municipalities of Île Jésus, and each of its neighbourhoods still has its own character: plexes and apartment blocks in Chomedey and Pont-Viau, condo towers around the metro, quiet streets of bungalows in Duvernay and Vimont, newer houses in Fabreville and Sainte-Rose, and waterfront properties in Laval-sur-le-Lac and Sainte-Dorothée.
We move apartments, condos and houses in every Laval neighbourhood, and between Laval and the rest of Greater Montreal, at the same hourly rate we charge on the island. Our crews reach Laval in about thirty minutes from our base in Verdun.
Laval neighbourhoods we serve
Chomedey, Laval-des-Rapides and Pont-Viau
The densest part of Laval, with duplexes, triplexes, walk-up apartment buildings and condo towers. Moves here look a lot like Montreal moves: the floor and the stairs decide the time, and the truck needs to park close to the door. Around the metro stations — Cartier, De la Concorde and Montmorency — condo towers require elevator reservations and certificates of insurance.
Sainte-Rose, Fabreville, Auteuil and Vimont
Family neighbourhoods of bungalows, split-levels, cottages and newer houses. House moves here usually need four movers and a 34-foot truck, and the basement and garage are where most of the volume is. Old Sainte-Rose, along the Rivière des Mille Îles, has heritage homes on narrow streets where we check access in advance.
Duvernay, Saint-Vincent-de-Paul and Saint-François
The east of Laval mixes houses, townhouses and apartment buildings, with larger lots toward Saint-François. Moves from here often go to Terrebonne, Repentigny or Montreal’s east end.
Sainte-Dorothée, Laval-Ouest and Laval-sur-le-Lac
The west of Laval has newer developments in Sainte-Dorothée, older cottages in Laval-Ouest and large properties in Laval-sur-le-Lac along the Lac des Deux Montagnes. Large homes with art, antiques or pianos are good candidates for our luxury and estate moving service.
Getting to and around Laval
Moves between Laval and Montreal cross the Rivière des Prairies, and the choice of bridge matters more than distance. Highways 15, 13 and 19 each cross the river, as do Pont Viau and Pont Lachapelle for local traffic. The Highway 25 bridge between Laval and Montreal’s east end is a toll bridge. We choose the route based on the two addresses and the time of day; on a weekday morning, an early start avoids most of the congestion on the 15 and the 13.
Inside Laval, most moves use the main boulevards — Saint-Martin, Notre-Dame, des Laurentides, Curé-Labelle, Chomedey — and residential streets where a 34-foot truck fits easily.
Condo moves in Laval
Laval has built many condo towers in the past twenty years, especially around Montmorency station, Centropolis and the Carrefour Laval area. These buildings usually require:
- An elevator reservation, often with a fixed time window
- Protective pads installed in the elevator
- A certificate of insurance naming the syndicate or management company
- Moves only at certain hours or on certain days
We confirm the rules with the building, book the elevator with you, bring the padding and send the certificate directly to the manager. We size the crew so the move fits inside the reserved window.
What a Laval move costs
Laval has two kinds of move. Condo towers around Montmorency and along the boulevards, with an elevator booking, are usually two movers at $120 an hour, or three with the 22-foot truck at $160 for a 4½ or 5½. Houses in Chomedey, Vimont, Auteuil or Sainte-Rose take three or four movers and the 34-foot truck, at $180 or $220. A move within Laval, or between Laval and anywhere else in Greater Montreal, is inside the standard travel-time zone: 1 hour at the same rate. The minimum is 2 hours of work. There is no out-of-town surcharge for Laval and no fee for stairs, weekends or fuel.
| Move | Crew | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| 3½ in Chomedey, second floor to second floor | 2 movers | 4–6 hours |
| 5½ in a condo tower near Montmorency | 3 movers | 5–8 hours |
| House in Sainte-Rose or Fabreville | 4 movers | 8–12 hours |
Moving between Montreal and Laval
Many of our Laval moves start or end on the island: young families moving from a Rosemont 5½ to a house in Vimont, retirees moving from a Laval bungalow to a condo in Ahuntsic, students moving between Laval and the downtown universities. These are local moves at the same hourly rate. If one end of the move is a Montreal plex, the borough parking permit applies on that side; see our Montreal page for how that works.
Moving between Laval and the North Shore
Laval sits between Montreal and the North Shore, and moves across the Rivière des Mille Îles are common: to Terrebonne, Boisbriand, Rosemère, Blainville, Saint-Eustache and further. See our North Shore page for those communities — again, the same hourly rate.
Offices and businesses in Laval
Laval has large business districts around Highway 440 and Boulevard Saint-Martin, and many offices, clinics and retailers across the city. We move them after hours, with a written quote after a site visit; see office moving and commercial moving.
Preparing for your Laval move
- Check your building’s rules if you live in a condo, and book the elevator as soon as you have a date.
- Clear the driveway on moving day so the truck can park close to the door.
- Watch the winter rules. Between late autumn and spring, snow-removal operations can restrict parking on residential streets; we check the forecast and signs the day before.
- Pack the basement early. In Laval houses, it usually holds more than any other room.
- Ask about storage if your dates do not line up — our storage service keeps your belongings until the new home is ready.
Laval moving checklist
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 4–6 weeks before | Book the move; if you live in a condo, ask the building about elevator reservations and moving hours |
| 3 weeks before | Start with the basement and garage; plan what to sell or donate |
| 2 weeks before | Check whether the truck can use your driveway or needs street space; order boxes |
| 1 week before | Transfer Hydro-Québec and internet; set up mail forwarding; notify the SAAQ and RAMQ of your new address |
| The day before | Clear the driveway; move cars; check for snow-removal signs in winter |
| Moving day | Walk through the home with the crew chief; keep essentials with you |
Moving into a new condo tower in Laval
Many of the new condo towers around Montmorency station, Centropolis and along the main boulevards are delivered in phases, and the first owners often move in while parts of the building are still being finished. That affects the move: the freight elevator may be shared with contractors, the loading area may be temporary, and the building may limit moves to specific days. We contact the building manager before the move, confirm the loading area and elevator times, and plan the crew so your move fits the slot you are given.
Family houses in Laval: the basement
Most Laval family homes have a finished basement, and many of our Laval estimates are decided there: a second living room, a guest room, storage, exercise equipment and years of boxes. Include the basement in your inventory, and if possible, pack it first — it is the room you use least before a move. Heavy basement items such as treadmills, freezers and pool tables are planned as specialty items so the right equipment is on the truck.
Laval, Montreal and the North Shore in one service area
Laval sits in the middle of our service area: the island of Montreal to the south across the Rivière des Prairies, the North Shore to the north across the Rivière des Mille Îles, and the West Island a short drive west. A move in any direction is a local move at the same hourly rate, with the same crew and the same written estimate. For moves leaving the region — to Quebec City, Ottawa or Toronto — see long-distance moving.
Students and young families
Laval is home to the Université de Montréal’s Laval campus and to Collège Montmorency, and many young families move from Montreal apartments to Laval houses. Student moves are usually small — two movers and a short morning — while first-house moves are usually larger than people expect, because the new house has room for everything that was in storage or at a parent’s home.
Laval to Montreal and back on the same day
Because Laval is so close to the island, many customers split a move: a few items picked up from a parent’s house in Laval, the main move from a Montreal apartment, and delivery to a new home in Laval — all on the same day with the same crew. We plan the order of the stops so the truck is loaded correctly, and the day is billed as one local move at the usual hourly rate.
What Laval customers book most
In Laval, the most common jobs are apartment and plex moves in Chomedey, Pont-Viau and Laval-des-Rapides, condo moves near the metro, and family house moves in Sainte-Rose, Fabreville, Vimont and Auteuil. Customers often add packing for the kitchen, storage between two dates, and specialty items from the basement. Businesses along Highway 440 and Boulevard Saint-Martin book after-hours office moves.
Laval in winter
Laval has long, cold winters and wide residential streets that are cleared by city crews. Snow-removal operations and winter parking rules can make a planned parking spot unusable for a few hours, and driveways piled with snow shrink the space for a truck. For winter moves, clear the driveway and walkways, salt the stairs, and keep an eye on snow-removal signs the day before; we do the same when we arrive.
