Rows of steel home and office safes of different sizes

Moving safes and heavy items in Montreal without damage to the item, the building or anyone on the stairs

Heavy items are where moves go wrong. Not because the item is fragile — a gun safe is built to survive a fire — but because of everything around it: the staircase it rolls down, the floor it stands on, the door frame it brushes, the people holding it on the turn. A 700-pound safe on a dolly that slips one step can go through a stair tread, a wall or a person. A treadmill dragged across hardwood leaves a mark for the life of the floor. A hot tub tipped the wrong way cracks its shell.

This page covers the items in a home or a business that are too heavy or awkward for a standard moving crew: home safes and fire-resistant safes, gun safes, commercial and burglary-rated safes, treadmills, ellipticals and home gyms, weight racks and dumbbells, hot tubs, oversized furniture and light commercial equipment. It explains how each is moved, what we need to know first, what you have to do, how floors and stairs come into it, and how the price is set.

Is this the right service for you?

  • You have a safe — at home, in a shop, in an office — that has to go to a new address, to a new floor or to a new room.
  • You bought a safe and the store delivers to the curb, not into your basement.
  • You have gym equipment that has to come out of a basement or a condo and go into another.
  • You have a hot tub to move to a new home or a new spot in the yard.
  • You have one or two very heavy pieces of furniture — a marble-topped table, a solid-wood armoire, a sectional that will not turn on the stairs.
  • You run a business with a safe, a heavy cabinet or equipment that must move after hours.

If these items are part of a household or office move, they go on the same plan and the same truck. If they are the only things moving, they are a job of their own. Pianos and pool tables have their own pages: piano moving and pool table moving.

Why heavy items need a different plan

The difference between moving a dresser and moving a safe is not only the number of people. It is the concentration of weight. A 600-pound safe sits on a footprint of about 60 by 60 cm — and on a dolly, all of that weight rests on two small wheels. Three things follow from it:

  • Stairs. Each step takes the load of the safe and the crew at once. Old wooden steps, outdoor metal staircases and basement stairs without proper support are the weak points.
  • Floors. Hardwood, vinyl and ceramic all mark or crack under a concentrated load. And a heavy safe’s final position matters: where it stands is where its weight stays.
  • Control. A heavy item that starts to move on its own cannot be stopped by hand. The equipment, the straps and the way the crew positions itself on the stairs are what keep it under control.

That is why we always ask for the weight or the model, the route and the floor before the day, and why the crew and the equipment we send follow the item, not the size of the home.

Safes

Types of safes we move

TypeTypical weightWhat matters most
Small home or fire-resistant safe50–300 lbUsually straightforward; the floor finish and the stairs
Fire-resistant filing cabinet300–700 lbDrawers secured, tall and top-heavy
Gun safe400–1,000+ lbHeight, weight, basement stairs, floor location
Burglary-rated or commercial safe700 lb to well over 1,000 lbRoute, floor load, building rules, crew size
Floor or wall safeVariesUsually installed in concrete or framing — removal is work for a safe technician

Weights vary a great deal with the size, the wall thickness and the fire rating. The model number usually tells us the weight; if you do not have it, the outside dimensions and a photo of the open door are enough to estimate it.

How we move a safe

  1. Empty and closed. You remove everything from the safe — documents, valuables, cash, firearms, ammunition. The safe moves empty and locked. We never need the combination or the key.
  2. Door secured. The door is locked and strapped so it cannot swing open if the bolts are retracted. The handle and the dial or keypad are padded.
  3. Route protected. Floor protection boards are laid along the route to spread the load and protect the finish. Stairs, railings, newel posts and door frames are padded.
  4. Strapped to the dolly. The safe is wrapped and strapped to a stair-climbing or heavy-duty dolly rated for its weight, with ratchet straps tight enough that it moves with the dolly as one piece.
  5. Step by step. On the stairs, the crew controls the safe from above and below, one step at a time. Nobody stands in its path on the downhill side.
  6. Into the truck. The safe goes up the truck ramp under control, is placed low and forward, over the axles, stood upright against the wall, strapped and blocked so it cannot shift.
  7. Placed exactly. At the new address, it goes where you want it — the exact corner, the orientation of the door — and is levelled. If you plan to anchor it, we place it so your installer can.

Gun safes and firearms

A gun safe is moved empty. Firearms and ammunition are removed by you before the move and transported by you, under the federal rules on storing and transporting firearms. We do not carry them, and we do not need to know what was in the safe — only its size and weight.

Gun safes are tall and top-heavy, which makes them harder to control on stairs than a lower safe of the same weight. Many live in basements, where the stairs are the narrowest and steepest part of the house. We check the headroom at the top of the stairs, the turn at the bottom and the condition of the treads before the day.

Commercial safes

Shops, pharmacies, offices, restaurants and jewellers often have heavy commercial safes, sometimes in places that were built around them. Commercial moves usually involve building rules — loading dock bookings, elevator weight limits, moving hours — and very often need to happen after closing or on a weekend. We plan the route through the building with you, check the elevator’s capacity against the load, and schedule the move when it disturbs your business least.

Floor safes and wall safes

A floor safe set in concrete or a wall safe built into framing is not moved like a free-standing safe. Getting it out is usually demolition and safe work, not moving. A safe technician or a contractor removes it; once it is free, we can move it.

Your floor and the safe’s final position

This is the part most people do not think about until the safe is in place. Residential floors in Quebec are designed for ordinary household loads spread over the floor — people, furniture, a full bookcase. A heavy safe puts several hundred kilograms on a small square, permanently.

Good practice:

  • Put a heavy safe on a ground-floor slab or in a basement on concrete whenever you can.
  • On a wooden floor, place it close to a load-bearing wall rather than in the middle of a span, and across the joists rather than between them if you can tell.
  • For a very heavy safe on an upper floor, ask a structural engineer. It is a short visit and it is the right answer.
  • Protect the finish under the safe with a mat or a board if you may move it again.

If we see something about the location that worries us — a soft floor, a cracked joist in an unfinished basement, a stair that flexes — we tell you before we place the safe, not after.

Gym and exercise equipment

Treadmills

Treadmills are heavy, long and unevenly weighted, with the motor at one end. Many fold; folding ones are locked in the folded position and strapped. Non-folding treadmills often need their console and uprights removed to fit through doors and around stair turns. We follow the way the manufacturer designed the machine to come apart, bag and label the hardware, and reassemble it at the new address.

Ellipticals, bikes and rowers

Ellipticals have long arms and a heavy flywheel; partial disassembly is common. Exercise bikes and rowers are usually lighter but awkward. All are wrapped, the moving parts secured, and they travel upright.

Home gyms, racks and weights

Multi-station home gyms are typically taken apart to the frame, with the weight stack removed and moved separately. Power racks and benches are disassembled. Free weights, plates and dumbbells are dense and add up fast; they go in small, strong boxes or on their own, never in a large box that nobody can lift safely. Tell us roughly how much weight you have — a home gym with several hundred pounds of plates changes the crew and the time.

Hot tubs

A hot tub is heavy, wide and has a shell that cracks if it is lifted from the wrong points. It is drained completely and disconnected from the power by an electrician before the move. Depending on the size, it is moved on its side on a hot-tub cart or dolly, and the route — through a gate, around a house, down a slope — matters as much as the weight. We look at the route from photos or in person before quoting. If a tub cannot go around the house, a crane lift over it is often the answer.

Oversized and very heavy furniture

Some furniture is heavy enough to be a specialty item on its own: solid-wood armoires and dressers, marble and stone tabletops, large cast-iron or stone pieces, sectional sofas that do not separate, and old pieces built in rooms that their doors were never meant to leave. We take apart what comes apart, crate or pad what does not, and measure the route for anything that will be tight. Stone and marble tops travel on edge and padded, never flat. Fragile and high-value pieces are covered on fine art and antique moving.

Light commercial equipment

Office and shop equipment — large printers and copiers, heavy filing systems, vending machines, display fridges, small machines — can often be moved with the same dollies, skates and crew as a safe. Send us the model and the access. For industrial machinery that needs rigging, forklifts or a gantry, we tell you honestly whether the job is ours or a rigging company’s.

Montreal access: what we check before the day

QuestionWhy it matters
How many steps, and are they inside or outside?Outdoor staircases carry the load on old or exposed structures
What are the stairs made of, and what condition are they in?Worn wooden treads and rusted metal stairs are the weak points
How wide is the narrowest point, and is there a turn?A tall gun safe needs height on the turn, not only width
Is there an elevator, and what is its capacity? The load must be under the elevator’s limit; the booking is made by you
What is the floor where the item will stand?Concrete, a ground-floor slab or a wooden floor on joists
Where can the truck park, and is there a slope?A long carry or a downhill path adds risk and time; a street permit, if needed, is requested by you

Photos of the item, the stairs and the spot where it goes answer most of these questions in one message.

What you need to do before we arrive

  1. Empty the safe and keep the contents with you. Leave it locked.
  2. Remove firearms and ammunition and transport them yourself.
  3. Find the model number or measure the safe’s outside dimensions.
  4. Clear the route — rugs rolled, furniture moved out of the path, pets and children elsewhere.
  5. Drain and disconnect a hot tub with your electrician.
  6. Unplug gym equipment and fold or lock what can be locked.
  7. Book the elevator in a condo or an office building and send us the building’s rules.

How heavy item moving is priced

SituationPrice
One safe or heavy item, ground floor or elevator at both endsfrom $350
With stairs, a basement or a large gun safequoted after the model or dimensions and the access
Commercial safes and equipmentquoted after photos or a site visit
As part of a full household or office moveadded to the move’s plan, less than a separate trip
Gym equipment in a full moveusually within the hourly time, with any disassembly included

The price is set before the day and includes the crew, the equipment, the floor and stair protection and the placement. What changes it is the weight, the stairs at each end, the distance from the truck, and whether the item needs disassembly. If something only becomes visible on the day — a staircase in worse condition than in the photos, a door narrower than measured — we stop and talk to you before going further.

Why Montreal customers trust us with heavy items

  • Our own crews, never subcontractors — the same movers who handle our piano and specialty work.
  • Equipment chosen for the item: stair-climbing and heavy-duty dollies, ratchet and lifting straps, floor protection, padded covers — and a hoisting set or a crane when the stairs are not an option.
  • A plan before the day. We ask about the weight, the route and the floor first, and tell you if anything concerns us.
  • A price before the day, not an hourly surprise on the stairs.
  • Seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. — useful for shops and offices that need the move outside business hours.

How to book

Send us the item — the model or dimensions and a photo — and a description of the stairs and floors at both addresses through the form below, or call us. We reply with the crew, the equipment and the price. For appliances, see appliance moving; for items that cannot go through the stairs at all, see crane moving.

Mistakes that make heavy items dangerous

  • Moving a safe with its contents. The extra weight shifts, the door strains against the bolts and the safe becomes harder to control on the stairs.
  • Using a regular hand truck. A light-duty hand truck is not rated for a gun safe, and its wheels bite into the stairs and the floor.
  • No floor protection. Even on a dolly, a heavy item marks hardwood, cracks ceramic tiles and tears vinyl.
  • Too few people. Two people can move a 600-pound safe on flat ground. On stairs, it takes more, positioned the right way.
  • Guessing the weight. A gun safe can weigh twice what it looks like. Find the model or measure it.
  • Choosing the spot after the safe is inside. Moving a heavy safe a second time, a few metres, can take as long as the first move. Decide the exact spot — and check the floor — first.

Buying a new safe: plan the delivery before you order

Many stores deliver safes to the curb or to the garage, not into a basement or up a staircase. Before you order, check:

  1. The safe’s weight and its height. A tall gun safe on a basement staircase needs headroom at the top step.
  2. The narrowest point of the route, including the door to the basement and the turn at the bottom.
  3. The final spot and the floor under it. A ground-floor slab or a concrete basement floor is ideal.
  4. Whether you will anchor it. If yes, have the anchors and the installer planned before the safe arrives.
  5. How the store delivers. If it is curbside only, we can take it from the curb, the garage or the store’s warehouse to its place.

Moving a safe or gym equipment to another city

Safes and gym equipment travel with long-distance moves the same way they travel across town: strapped upright against the front wall of the truck, padded, and blocked so they cannot shift. A heavy safe is loaded first and unloaded last at the destination, and its weight is part of the load plan from the start. We move them with households to Quebec City, Gatineau, Sherbrooke, Ottawa, Toronto and beyond; see long-distance moving for how pricing works.

Heavy items across Greater Montreal

We move safes, gym equipment and other heavy items across the island of Montreal and in Laval, the West Island, the South Shore, the North Shore and Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Basement gun safes in suburban houses, home gyms in condo towers and shop safes in older commercial buildings each bring their own access questions; the method is the same everywhere.
