Japan used to make its currency out of silver like many nations in the world. United States had the last silver coin end its circulation in 1969 with the 50 cent Kennedy coin being made of common materials next year. Last Japanese silver coins for circulation where minted in 1966. Around this time Nixon removed USA dollar from gold standard replacing it with Bretton Woods System. The silver content was removed from basic coinage around the world due to inflation that followed. Now the silver content is much more valuable than face value of these coins. Due to inflation the "Yen" became worth one USA penny when a century ago it was made from Gold and was worth about one Spanish Milled Dollar. The Spanish Milled Dollar (Piece of Eight for pirate fans) was the currency which the Yen and the USA dollar where based on.
